Garmin Forerunner 305 Getting Started

Before I got the Garmin Forerunner 305, I borrowed a Polar 625X from my friend to see if I liked the idea of using a running watch. The setup of the Garmin 305 is really easy compared to the Polar 625X. You simply turn it on after you have charged it for about 3 hours and it will immediately ask you three questions:

1) What is your quest (US or Metric)?

2) Do you have a separate food pod (Y/N)?

3) Do you have a cadence sensor (Y/N)

When you have answered the three questions you are done and ready to start! You do not need to do any further calibrations so I immediately went outside to test it. I was happy to find out that the Garmin Foreunner 305 watch is comfortable to wear. Although the watch looks a bit bulky it fits very well on my wrist and it is very light.

Test of the Garmin Foreunner 305

Because I was hungry I decided that the first test of the watch would be to walk to the local Chinese takeaway (Yes, I know, it sounds odd but I realized that the watch can be used for other things than sports). I had to wait for a minute or so when I got outside my front door before the watch picked up the satellites. There are two important buttons on the front (Lap, and Start/Stop). On the right hand side of the watch there are smaller buttons which are for changing the view or data displayed. The buttons on the left hand side controls the backlight (also On/Off) and the Mode button which is used for navigating the menu system.  I pushed the Start/Stop button and headed towards the Chinese takeaway. On my way I could follow my speed and see the distance I had walked.

Forerunner satellite connection lost and found again

As soon as I went into the Chinese Takeaway to order the food (Beef with Ginger and Pineapple) I was informed with a beep that the Garmin had lost the satellite connection. I was a bit worried that I would have to wait for another minute or so when I got out again, but the watch immediately picked up the satellites again. My last location must have been stored in the memory to make it is easier for the watch to find the location again.

I decided to take a another way home just to see if the GPS would pick up the different route, so with my Chinese food in a bag and happy that my new running watch worked so well I walked home again.

Transferring data from the Garmin Forerunner 305

When I came home I could not wait to see the data the watch had gathered so while eating I transferred the data from the watch to my laptop and the Garmin Training Center software. I also exported the data to Google Earth. The Garmin had correctly mapped my route in great detail. The Beef with Ginger and Pineapple tasted great and my new running watch has exceeded my expectations. I was really happy that I had bought it, and I thought to myself that the price I paid in Amazon was not expensive at all for all that. My first expression of the Garmin was really good.
