Garmin Forerunner 910XT Review

In November 2011 Garmin launched the Garmin Forerunner 910XT.   The new Forerunner 910XT is an upgrade to the Forerunner 310XT. It has all kinds of great features for swimmers, runners, and cyclists because it is designed specifically for multisports training.  It does not only have the distance, speed/pace, elevation functions for runner and bikers, but also features for swimmers such as swim distance, stroke identification, stroke count and pool lengths.  Unlike some of the other Garmin Running watches the Garmin Forerunner 910XT is water resistant to 50 meters.

SWOLF Score

Swimmers would also benefit from knowing their SWOLF Score which the watch computes for you. SWOLF is a measurement of swimming efficiency. Efficient swimmers are able to swim faster while using less strokes per lap. The SWOLF Score is the sum of the time for one length plus the number of strokes for that length. For example 30 seconds plus 25 strokes equals a SWOLF score of 55.

Use Forerunner 910XT for rowing, windsurfing or kayaking

The 910XT’s robust design and easy operation makes it suited for other water sports than swimming as for example  rowing, kayaking, paddle boarding, or windsurfing.

What is the size of  the Forerunner 910XT?

The FR910XT (measures: WxHxD: 54 x 61 x 15 mm)  is 4 mm slimmer  than the Garmin FR310XT  (measures 54 x 56 x 19 mm,so the the difference is quite significant, almost half a centimeter. In fact the new FR910XT is the smallest GPS sports watch Garmin has ever created.

How does  Garmin Forerunner 910XT look?

As mentioned the 910XT  is a lot sleeker than the 310XT. It remarkable that a such a slim watch can contain such massive amounts of technology. The black casing makes it look sporty but also sophisticated at the same time. I do not think the design is as nice as heart rate watches from Suunto or Polar in the same price range.

Conclusion

Overall I think Garmin can be proud of its successor to the Foreunner 310XT. The switch from wrist to bike with the quick release works really well and the the wireless update to your MAC or PC makes it really easy to transfer your data.

A big “plus” is that  Garmin has integrated the ANT+ technology in the Forerunner 910XT watch. The ANT+ component compatibility is valuable if you want  to use your sports watch with accessories from different brands, or want to use your sports watch to be able to communicate with the electronic cardio equipment at the gym. It means that you can use for example a Timex HR strap, a Suunto footpod on a CycleOps spinning bike.

I am not satisfied with the lack of standby mode and battery life time, it could have been better but I guess it is difficult to enclose a powerful battery in such a slim watch. You may consider adding an external battery pack with solar charger so the 910XT sports watch can tackle being away from home for longer.
