Garmin Forerunner 305

The Garmin Forerunner 305 motivated me to improve my fitness level

This product exceeds my expectations. I have only owned it for two months and already it is proving very useful. After 2 months of watching and analyzing the data, I am now using the gathered information to adapt my training to increase my fitness level. Two of my colleagues who run with me use the data to inform us in order to tailor our training. I never go for a run without my Garmin 305 and really look forward to seeing the results after each run. With the virtual partner I am able to compete against others, or myself on previous runs. I can also download training programmes from the internet. Overall, I’d recommend it highly. You can customize or create your own training programmes which you can plan and schedule in advance, all you then have to is to press start and it will do the training session that you programmed in for that day.

The Gamin Forerunner training software

The watch keeps track of your pace, your lap times, your distance, your heart rate, and how many calories you’ve burned. After each run you can transfer the data to the Garmin Training Center software bundled with the watch. The PC software is quite basic and simple, but it is really easy to use and shows you graphs of your heart rate, speed, pace, elevation etc, but the maps in the software are not good. When I run around a lake, it sometimes shows that I have been running in the lake, but it is not because the watch does not gather accurate data, it is because the Garmin forerunner maps are very simple, and only meant to give you and indication of where you have been. If you want to see a more detailed map, it is very easy to export the data to Google Earth, and here it shows very clear that I have been running along the lake and not in the lake. In fact Garmin claims that the accuracy of the GPS built into the watch is +- 6m, and so far I have found that to be true, the integrated high-sensitivity GPS receiver with SRIFstarIII is indeed very accurate.

The training software comes in handy when you are preparing for marathons or triathlons, where you will need to make sure that youn optimize your training. The graphs enables you to spot your weaknesses and target these in your training, and with the graphs it becomes very clear if you are able to maintain your targeted pace.

The Garmin connect website

As an alternative to the Garmin Forerunner training software you can also upload your data to the Garmin connect website or you can use the tow in combination. When you upload your workout data to the website it will be stored there so you can do comprehensive analysis of all your data. The Garmin Connect website shows your data in clear and easy to understand reports. The reports are a very useful way to track your fitness progress and targets. The website enables you to run activity type reports which allow you to see statistics on the specific activities you do (running, cycling, etc). You can also run event type reports which allows allow you to group your events, like training, recreation or races. I usually run reports by week, and month to track my performance over time. Since the I got the watch 2 months ago I have already been able to see some improvement in my fitness level, on the 8 km route I usually run I am, now 1 minute faster.

The Garmin Forerunner can be used indoors

If you train both outdoors and indoors you will be pleased to know that if you include the Foot Pod accessory with your Garmin Forerunner 305 (not included in the box, it must be bought separately) , you will be able to monitor your calories burned and distance covered also if you are working out indoors. You simply attach the Garmin Foot Pod to your shoe allowing the information gathered with your foot to be transmitted to your Garmin running watch.

Garmin Forerunner 305 Review

This running watch is definitely a very good motivator. The best thing about the Garmin Forerunner 305 is that you can see yourself improve your performance, which will boost your motivation to keep on working out and continue training. One of the best features for improving your fitness level and performance is the ability to compete against a “virtual partner” or your past results. If you compete against a “virtual partner” the watch will let you know whether you are behind or ahead and by how much. With the Garmin Training Software included with the watch, you get access to charts and graphs which help you analyze your performance in further detail.

Garmin Foreunner 305 Pros

  • Although the 305 looks big and bulky, it is very light and fits my wrist well.
  • Very precise route and data logging.
  • The 305 is water resistant, so it will not get damaged in the rain or if you sweat a lot.
  • In my opinion the price is very reasonable. I bought in on Amazon, whereper I found it to be cheaper than in ordinary sports shops

 Garmin Foreunner 305 Cons

  • Rumors say that the built in battery will only last for around 2 years before the battery will die.
  • The 305 looks big and bulky.
  • It does not exactly look like a fashion accessory, and it is only available in one color.
  • The altitude recording is bad, sometimes I think the elevation shown does not really match the reality. There seems to be some measurement errors in the altitude as sometimes I run a flat distance on a track and the Garmin Forerunner 305 says that I have done 300 feet of elevation.
  • Slow customer service. First I want to underline that my Garmin 305 worked perfectly when I got it and there has not been any problems with at all, so so far I have not needed the customer service, but some friends have told me that the customer service is really slow. You may consider getting a Suunto, a Polar or another brand.
