Steve Prefontaine

Steve Roland “Pre” Prefontaine (January 25, 1951 – May 30, 1975) was an American middle and long-distance runner.

Steve Prefontaine was born in 1951 in the small town of Coos Bay, Oregon. During his short 24-year lifespan, Prefontaine developed from a hometown hero, to a record-setting college phenomenon, to an internationally celebrated track star. He started his running career at Marshfield High School and quickly became one of the fastest runners in the United States. In his senior year at Marshfield High School he set the U.S. record in the two mile run. Over his career, he won 120 of the 153 races he ran, and never lost a collegiate (NCAA) race at the University of Oregon. At Oregon University he won an impressive seven NCAA national titles: three in cross country, 1970, 1971, and 1973 and four in the three-mile in track. He continued on with his running career and in 1972 he made the Olympic team in the 5000 meter run.

In 1975 he died in a car accident. He had just set the U.S. record in the 5000 meter race and his car hit a rock and overturned killing him. The news of his death shocked the running community all over the world. Pre’s Rock is a memorial at the site of the roadside boulder where Prefontaine died. Many runners inspired by Pre leave behind memorabilia to honor his memory, such as race numbers, medals, and running shoes.  The rock is just across the Willamette River from the east end of Pre’s Trail. Steve Prefontaine’s legacy will live on forever. His life story has been detailed in the documentary film Fire on the Track as well as in two dramatic films: 1997’s Prefontaine and 1998’s Without Limits. Prefontaine is honored every year at the Prefontaine Memorial Run,  a challenging ten kilometer road race across one of his old training courses, with its finish line at the high school track where he first competed. The Pre Classic  is held every year at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon featuring some of the best track and field athletes of the world. Runners keep his memory alive by posting some of his famous quotes on their shirts.
